The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 better know as COBRA allows for continuation of health coverage when coverage is lost due to a qualifying event. A qualifying event includes termination of employment, reduction in employment hours, divorce, death, or ceasing to be an eligible dependent under the health care plan. Employees and eligible family members have 60 days from the date of the qualifying event to elect COBRA coverage.
