Mr. Espy graduated from The University of Alabama in 1969, earning a bachelor’s degree through the School of Commerce and Business Administration, and again in 1972 with his Juris Doctorate from The University of Alabama School of Law. As an undergraduate, he served The University of Alabama as SGA President. While at the University, he was selected as a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), Jasons and Bench and Bar. He was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1972 and is a successful attorney in Montgomery as a principal in the firm of Melton, Espy and Williams, P.C. Previously, he was a former deputy district attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit of Alabama and a federal law clerk.
In November of 2000, Mr. Espy was elected to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System and served as President Pro Tempore of the Board of Trustees from September 2005 to September 2008. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Baptist Health System and the Past President of the Federal Court Advisory Committee. He was elected by his peers as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, International Society of Barristers, International Academy of Trial Lawyers, American Board of Trial Advocates, and the Alabama Law Foundation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar, and Montgomery County Bar Association. He is listed in the publications “The Best Lawyers in America” and “Super Lawyers.” He has been extremely involved in civic and community activities in Montgomery, especially youth organizations.
